Tips: Cell Phone Use While Driving

You hear it over and over again – don’t use your cell phone while driving.

But do you really take that advice?

For some, it can be a difficult temptation to resist. It’s so easy to answer your phone, send a short text, or quickly try to pull up directions on your phone while driving down the road, but it’s not safe.

With a simple search on the Internet using a phrase like “texting while driving” or “using cell phone while driving” you can easily pull up a variety of articles. Unfortunately, many of those articles deal with devastating losses – someone’s life, and in some instances, multiple lives lost.

When scrolling through my Facebook news feed this past weekend (yes, safely from my home), I came across an article that a friend of mine had shared.

A teen driver rear-ended a semi-truck and was instantly killed after another semi-truck then rear-ended her vehicle. It was later discovered that at the time of the accident, the driver had been interacting with peers on Facebook.

The irony of the situation? Shortly before the crash she posted, “I can’t discuss this matter now. Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha.”

Even as a cautious driver, one who vowed to delay an online conversation until she was off the road, it was too late to save her life.

So, before it’s too late for you or your loved ones, put your cell phones away while you’re driving.  Focus on the task at hand – driving, not on the Internet or an incoming call.
